2017 MX-5
2017 Mazda MX-5 Overview

After 26 years and more than 1,000,000 Mazda MX-5s sold globally, the fourth-generation MX-5 has circled back to what made the world fall in love with it in the first place. When the first-generation MX-5 made its world debut at the 1989 Chicago Auto Show, it ushered in a new era of the roadster: fun and affordable, yet with the added benefit of Japanese reliability. And, predictably, its popularity skyrocketed. MX-5s have become daily drivers, weekend toys, and championship-winning race cars alike.

Lightweight, nimble, and fun to drive, the 2017 MX-5 draws inspiration from MX-5s that came before it, pairing the driver as one with the car – in Japanese, it’s loosely translated as “Jinba Ittai.” But it also carves a path that is thoroughly modern and uncharted for Mazda’s flagship roadster.

While the philosophy of purity behind MX-5 has remained through the years, the 2017 MX-5 features SKYACTIV Technology to make it faster and more efficient, and KODO—Soul of Motion design for its striking looks. The MX-5 embodies Mazda’s commitment to pure driving enjoyment and its spirit lives in every vehicle it sells. And clearly the formula seems to have worked, as the 2016 MX-5 was the first vehicle to ever win World Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year in the same year.

The MX-5 rolls into 2017 with minimal equipment changes on the mid-trim GS only. The base-grade MX- 5 GX remains as it was in 2016, with a starting price of $31,900. For this price, the MX-5 standard equipment includes push-button start, auto leveling LED headlights with light signature, LED rear combination lights, air conditioning, Bluetooth, cruise control, and 6 speakers (including driver headrest speakers). All MX-5s are powered by an eager 2.0L SKYACTIV-G engine pushing out 155 horsepower, a slick-shifting SKYACTIV-MT 6-speed manual transmission. The SKYACTIV-Drive 6-speed automatic transmission is a no-cost option across all trim levels.

Stepping up to the GS at $35,800 is the true enthusiast’s choice, which brings in sport suspension with Bilstein® shocks, limited slip differential, strut tower bar, and induction sound enhancer, available with manual transmission only. The 2017 MX-5 GS is now equipped with advanced blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert. Other standard equipment on the MX-5 GS includes rain-sensing wipers, 7-inch touchscreen display with Mazda Connect and HMI commander, navigation, and auto on/off headlights. An optional Sport Package ($4,400) heats things up with 17-inch forged BBS wheels, Brembo® front brakes (opposed piston design/unique rotor), and heated leather/Alcantara® trimmed Recaro® sport seats.

The MX-5 GT ($39,200) was designed for the pampered enthusiast, taking all the sporting equipment from the GS, and layering it with some added luxury, technology, and comfort. Heated leather seats become standard, along with Bose® premium audio with 9 speakers, lane departure warning, adaptive front lighting system, high beam control, and auto climate control.

All 2017 MX-5s come standard with Mazda’s Unlimited Mileage Warranty, which allows the driver to drive as much as they want, as far as they want without worrying about going over the mileage limit. The basic warranty for Mazda vehicles covers all parts found to be factory defective for 3 years, regardless of the number of kilometers driven. Additional warranties cover Powertrain components for a period of 5 years, unlimited mileage; body sheet metal perforation for 7 years, unlimited mileage; and roadside assistance for 3 years, unlimited mileage.

With the 3-year roadside assistance program, customers can feel secure knowing that wherever they travel throughout North America they can obtain towing, winching, battery boosting, emergency fuel delivery, and tire changing services if needed. They will even get help if locked out of the vehicle. Travel planning services and emergency travel expense reimbursement are included in the roadside assistance program.
