-- Mazda sales up 22% versus December 2009 to 5,218 --

RICHMOND HILL, ON, Jan. 4 /CNW/ - Mazda Canada retailed 5,218 vehicles in December, the highest sales for that month in the company's forty-two year history in Canada.  December sales exceeded the previous record of 4,811 vehicles, established in 2007, by 407 units.  On a year-over-year basis, December sales were up 22 percent compared to the same month in 2009.  Both the Mazda2 subcompact and CX-7 compact crossover utility vehicle recorded their highest monthly sales for the entire year in December.

On an annual basis, Mazda Canada closed 2010 retailing 78,662 vehicles, an increase of 7 percent compared to 2009.

Sales of Mazda passenger cars, crossover utility vehicles and light trucks all increased in 2010.  Passenger car sales totalled 65,079 units, representing a 3 percent year-over-year increase.  Crossover utility vehicle sales totalled 11,038 units, an increase of 27 percent, and B-Series pickup truck sales of 2,545 units represent a 55 percent increase over 2009.

"Canadians' love affair with compact cars and crossovers continues and we see that in our 7 percent growth in annual sales," said Don Romano, President of Mazda Canada Inc. "The Mazda3 is just as popular as ever with sales increasing 2 percent versus 2009 and is again the second best-selling passenger car in Canada, while our compact CX-7 crossover saw an annual sales increase of 59 percent compared to 2009."

Driving Mazda's growth in 2010 was the continuing strong demand for the compact Mazda3, and crossover utility vehicles.  Mazda's top-selling vehicle, the Mazda3, retained its position as the second best-selling car in Canada with a total of 47,740 sales in 2010, a 2 percent increase over last year's total.  The CX-7 compact crossover utility vehicle had a 59 percent year-over-year sales increase to 4,466 units, while the CX-9 intermediate crossover recorded 1,282 sales, a 26 percent increase over 2009.
