Richmond Hill, ON (June 5, 2015) – Mazda Canada Inc. today announced a voluntary recall campaign of 2003-2008 Mazda6, 2006-2007 Mazdaspeed6 and 2004-2008 RX-8 vehicles for replacement of the frontal driver side airbag inflator, and 2004-2006 Mazda B-series vehicles for replacement of the frontal passenger side airbag inflator, due to a defect as indicated by the airbag manufacturer Takata.
The concern of the recall is that the inflator propellant could potentially deteriorate over time and lead to over-aggressive combustion when the airbag deploys. This could create excessive internal pressure within the inflator and the body of the airbag module could rupture.
Some of the vehicles in this recall were previously subject to a voluntary Safety Improvement Campaign announced on December 11, 2014, and are now being changed to formal recalls. Furthermore, these recalls now cover a wider manufacturing period and will be conducted globally.
The airbags subject to recall affect several automotive manufacturers, including Mazda. Approximately 66,000 vehicles in Canada are affected. Mazda has received no reports about accidents or abnormal airbag deployments in Mazda vehicles in Canada.
A Notice of Defect was submitted to Transport Canada on June 4, 2015. Owners of record will be notified of this issue as parts become available, and will be instructed to take their vehicles to a Mazda dealer for repair. The dealer will replace the defective parts free of charge to the vehicle owners.
